National Oilwell Varco (NOV), Petronas, and Velesto Energy, Malaysia’s energy giants, have joined forces to integrate robotics into drilling operations and deploy rig mechanised automation procedures. Through a memorandum of understanding, the three parties hope to create a cooperative framework that will improve operational performance and safety on Velesto Drilling-operated rigs by utilising NOV’s drilling automation system and further energy carbon optimisation technologies, including as robotics technology.
Through sophisticated automation and digitalisation technologies as key enablers, this collaboration also aims to reduce emissions, achieve cost efficiency, and change and optimise drilling operation efficiency in Malaysia. To guarantee that the deployment of NOV’s robotics and NOVOS system is in line with its strategic objectives, Petronas will offer operational and steering direction on the technology’s deployment under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding.
While NOV will offer technical assistance and training for local implementation and knowledge transfer, Velesto will supervise the integration and optimisation of these technologies on its drilling rigs. According to drilling contractor Velesto, this project aims to promote the industry’s future growth by promoting technology adoption and giving local personnel enhanced capabilities in line with Petronas’ sustainability goals. Velesto is the biggest jack-up owner and operator in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, with a fleet of six fully owned premium jack-up rigs and two hydraulic workover units.
